WIP of the Week - Monkey Socks

I was told these Monkey Socks knit up really quickly. And it sure is true. I cast on Sunday night and look where I am now. For a slow knitter like me, this is amazing.

I actually thought I might finish this sock today, but I've discovered a few things that get in the way of sock knitting.

  1. Hearing a funny noise while drinking morning coffee and deciding it must either be the new DVR cable box, or the refrigerator, which is on it's last leg.
  2. Deciding that the funny noise is neither of these, but must be the laundry.
  3. Realizing that the laundry should have finished an hour ago, and upon going to check, finding the entire basement floor covered in two inches of water with more spraying out of the back of the washing machine.
  4. Running up and down the cellar stairs numerous times during the day to be sure the pump borrowed from Dad is still pumping water out.
  5. Trying to take a shower and realizing that the two inches of water have put out the pilot light on the hot water heater. Also, the hot water heater needs hours to dry out before the light can be re-lit and no hot water remains because it's all over the basement floor.
  6. Using the wet-vac to suck up the rest of the water, and then dropping the whole thing when trying to carry it outside to empty, thus returning all water to the basement floor.
Yes, all of these things can greatly hinder sock knitting efforts. I recommend avoiding them at all costs. I further predict that shopping for a new washer, dryer and refrigerator during the weekend will also greatly hinder the sock knitting progress.

Oh bummer!!! Hope the washer gets to working good soon!

The things that get in the way of our knitting!! :)

Wow - you are cookin on that sock!

I have had basement days like that myself - I stil have nightmares!

Yikes! I have to confess, wet-vacs scare me. Our basement used to flood regularly when it rained with any intensity and so we got one. But it makes me nervous.

On the plus side, your sock looks great!

The sock looks great, and you will finish soon. Appliance shopping seems to involve a great amount of waiting around, so bring the sock with you.

Wow with all that going on I'm impressed you got that far. The sock looks great though. Good luck with the appliance shopping!

Your socks look great, even with the bacement fiasco.

Ours gushed water out the back the first time we used it in our new house... fun times. I think we used duct tape to do a quick fix...

Hope you have a better day today!

Ugh. What a day.

But you've got some great socks going there.

Oh no... That's a bad day. Lovely socks though!

Holy @&*! I would have lost it at that point. Wrap your head in a bandanna, put on your sneakers, and get the hell out of the house for awhile!

Oh nooooooooooooo!!! Times like these I am glad I rent so someone else has to fix it. At least when you do have time to knit, you are going to have an awesome pair of socks! They look great! :)

Goodness Karen! What a morning! We recently replaced our washer, dryer and refrigerator too! Why is it that everything big seems to go at the same time?! I'm not sure what you are looking for, but we just bought the Duet Front Loaders and I can NOT say enough GOOD things about these machines! I hate laundry with a passion (having four kids will do that to a person), but I hate it much, much less since acquiring these two machines!

Good luck appliance shopping and your sock looks great!

Ugh--I've never lived in a house with a basement but this sounds like the sutff nightmares are made of!

Seriously? Seriously...there's some weird astro stuff going on causing all kinds of havoc, I'm convinced. My friend got stuck in traffic on her way to Dallas on I35 last night because there was flooding, and her husband tried to drive off the freeway to get on the frontage road, and guess what? They got stuck in the mud. Another friend had a flat tire yesterday and discovered that her spare was flat too. It's just nuts.

On the bright side ... your sock is looking GREAT! I just knew that yarn would bring out the best of monkey.

Also, new appliances are fun. It hurts the pocketbook, but your stress level will go down in knowing that they won't break.

Sorry to hear it was such a frustrating day.

Gorgeous socks, horrible washer! He shall be dammed to a life on a pile of metal scraps for taking away that valuable knitting time. Good luck finding a new one. I've been there and can feel your frustration. :-)

Oh NOOO! Here's hoping you have a much quieter, and more sock-productive weekend (with HOT showers!)

What a day! At least your sock looks awesome!

You have had one heck of a day! Hope the weekend is better. Love the monkey socks.

how dreadful Karen! You just fix those appliances once and for all; buy new ones; or you could just tell your appliances that you are going to buy new ones unless they start performing better (that has worked in the past for me!). I hate cold showers, esp when it is still not warm, hey! Happy thoughts to you and pea

Love the sock. Sorry to hear about your washing machine disaster. Good luck appliance shopping.

:( Poor Karen! I hope today is much better! The sock is looking beautiful though. Perhaps a little car knitting as you appliance shop. . .

Flooding is the WORST. You just feel so out of control. The weather has been pretty dry of late, though, so hopefully it'll evaporate quickly!

Thank goodness for good looking socks to make you get through a day like that!!!

I had cast those socks on but the ribbing was getting me. I don't have the pattern at hand but the twisting was totally messing me up....any insight since you are well into your would be appreciated!!

Your minkey looks so terrific: of course I love that colourway (it looks a lot like my clapotis yarn!!!). As for the rest of your day--let's just be glad it is OVER! ox

Ugh! I hate it when that happens. With all that water, it's truly amazing how much progress you made on your lovely socks. I love the colorway - it's striping so nicely.

I'm sure it was horrible while it was happening, but that will be a funny story about 5 years from now. The socks look great! What is that yarn; it's beautiful!
