Four hours . . .

That's my estimation of how much sleep I got last night, so my apologies if I am not quite coherent.

Yesterday actually started as a good day for me and Pea. He had a big meeting at work and needed to wear a suit. He got a lot of compliments on how nice he looked and he felt great. I just was feeling really good all day too.

A little after 5:30, he called me as usual to let me know he was catching the train home. We live a mile from the train station, so it works out good. A shuttle runs from work to the train, and then he walks the mile down Main Street and is home about an hour after he leaves work.

But last night, things went really wrong. As I was making dinner, he called from his cell and asked if I could drive around the corner and pick him up. Everything after that is a bit of a blur. As he was walking home, on Main Street in the early evening, three teenagers knocked him down from behind. They punched him several times in the face and reached into his pocket to steal his wallet. He tried to yell for help, but there were no other pedestrians around and no cars stopped or even called 911. I have a really hard time believing there were no cars on Main Street at that time of day, so I'm sure someone must have seen this happening and chose to ignore it.

We are both a bit numb today. We are trying to understand how something like this could happen in our quiet little town. We did give a statement to the police and cancelled all of our credit cards and our bank card. We took him to the ER for a cat scan, and it came back clean.  (No, I didn't bring my knitting for the ER wait - he needed my full attention.) They gave him a prescription for the pain. His nose is swollen (it had bled at the time) and he's got a bunch of red bumps and a cut on his face. I'm sure he will be very sore from being pushed down too. He was told not to go to work today, and luckily he's still sleeping.  We didn't get home from the hospital until 1:00 am, so it was a really long night.

Just thinking about this still brings tears to my eyes this morning. But we are trying to look on the bright side and count our blessings. I shudder to think about how much worse this could have been. They could have had weapons. They could have beat him even more than they did. I can't let myself think about anything beyond that - but yes, it could have been so much worse. So today, we will start the process of putting this behind us. I'll get new bank cards. I'll take him for a new license and buy him a new wallet. I'll be dropping him off and picking him up at the train station from now on. We'll fight the urge to hide away from everything (as demonstrated by K.C. and her Kitty Kondo).

And I'll hug him a little closer from now on.

I'm so glad you guys went to the hospital and got a CT scan. And I'm really sorry that this happened. I hope Pea's injuries heal quickly. ((hugs))

It is truly horrible that no one stopped to help. I hope they catch these thugs and I hope anyone who saw the incident and did nothing will know they made the world just a little bit worse that day.

I wish Pea a speedy recovery--both physically and emotionally.

Oh, I am so, so sorry that this happened. I hope he heals quickly, though I am sure the emotional trauma will take much longer to heal (for both of you!). You are right to be thankful that it was not worse. How scary to think about...

Oh my goodness! I'm happy to hear that he's all right physically. Emotionally it will take time for both of you to heal.

Unfortunately small towns are not immune to problems we tend to see in cities.

Karen, that's awful, its not nice to think that these things can happen in quiet little towns. I hope the wounds heal quickly.

That is just awful. I hope Pea is recovering from his physical injuries. It will take some time for the emotional scars to heal though.

I'm sending comforting thoughts to you, Pea, and KC.

It is just absolutely terrible that this happened with no one to help. I am glad that Pea is physically OK and hope you both heal mentally soon. Taking him to and from work sounds like a good idea to ease both your minds.

Petting a kitty definitely helps with the healing process. K.C. arrived right on time.

Poor Pete! Poor Karen! Holy crap this is scary. I feel like crying for you both and I hope your sense of security recuperates from this awful ordeal. The very idea of witnesses not bothering to stop or call (assuming there were any) is terrifying. People have to take care of one another. Hugs and scritches all around (scritches are for KC)

Karen and Pea

Somehow you will find the strength to put this violent attack to rest. it will take time.. I will pray and pray for you.

They say that after such an event, you should work out very very hard to get the built up adrenaline out of your system so you can sleep etc. Don't know if that is even possibe.

Will email you later. Huge hugs

Oh, Karen! I am so sorry! What a horrible experience for both of you! It makes me so mad and angry, and sad that people could do that! Hope you both recover and feel better soon. Our love and hugs to you both.

Poor Pea! And poor you, too.

And I think it is kind of harder when it happens in a small town: it is less common in such places and so seems all the more heinous because no one is inurred to it there.

Oh my god, I am just glad he is okay...take time to be with each other this weekend, he'll need you...my thoughts go out to both of you...

Karen, I hope Pete is doing alright and I am so sorry to hear about what happen. I hate the way the world can be. Wish there weren't people like the ones that hurt him.

amen to the hugs. same thing happened to my honey. only difference--he's an ex-green beret & the attackers got a big surprise when he sent THEM to the hospital. seems they'd been preying on old people for a long time. they won't be doing that any more. there is some justice sometimes.

OMG. I saw your twitter and knew something was up (I'm so behind on blogs). Thank goodness he is basically ok and only has a few minor injuries. It could have been so much worse. I'm in shock! I don't know exactly where you live but I know the general area and I never would have thought that something like this would happen around there. Big hugs to you both!!!
