It didn't want to be socks: +1 yarn
It twisted itself into quite a mess: +1 yarn

Way to go! I'm glad to see that you prevailed. I just made a royal mess of a skein of Schaefer Anne...and y'know, you just can't bear to cut a 560-yd skein no matter HOW bad the knot! It all worked out in the end. Sort of. :)
