If the computer goddess is smiling on me . . . .

you should be able to read this post. And you might even be reading it with my new domain name up in your little browser window.

That's right. I went ahead and bought my own domain name through GoDaddy. My web classes have not begun to deal with domains and hosting and such, but I've always been the impatient sort. I will continue to host my blog with Blogger, since I have always been quite happy here (and after all, it's free!!)

The set up was quite a challenge. I know nothing about DNS servers and CNAME settings and such. I've muddled through as best I could, using any tips and tutorials I could find. It's not perfect, but here's what seems to be happening right now:

  • If you type www.mostlyselftaughtknitter.com - you get to my blog
  • If you type www.k-knit.blogspot.com - you get to my blog, but do not see my new domain name in your browser
  • If you type k-knit.blogspot.com - you get to my blog and you do see my new domain name in your browser
  • If you type mostlyselftaughtknitter.com - you get a big old error message
Does any of this matter? Not really, as long as my blog is working. But, because I am Miss OCD and all, I've spent two days trying to figure out how typing any of the four options above will bring you to my blog, with my new domain name in your browser. I'm hoping we learn it all soon in my class. Or maybe some of you brilliant computer people have tips for me??

***ETA: I found somewhat of a work-around for the error message on the mostlyselftaughtknitter.com problem. It's not perfect, but it's better than the 404 server error screen!! And I can step away from the computer screen.

That stuff is totally confusing. I go to school for it (basically) and I still can barely make a website. It *really* helps to have friends who know how it all works.

I muddled through that all too. There's a setting on godaddy that fixes the error that your get for mostlyselftaughtknitter.com, but danged if I can remember what it is. I ran across it when I was muddling through the other stuff. If I remember it, I'll email you.

How very cool! I hope to have my own domain someday too. Thankfully I have you on my bloglines, so there's no need to type in your address but good luck getting it all to work!

How neat! I was wondering if you had, cause I did notice the change as it loaded your page :). I was even going to ask, but you answered with this blog, lol. I did type k-knit.blogspot.com, and it switched to www.mostlyselftaughtknitter.com how cool is that :D

Very impressive! It's good to have a domain name that more closely reflects your blog's name. I also get you through bloglines, but I'm sure it'll help others find you more easily!

Woooooooooo hooooooooo for you Karen! Works fine here :) I had started to do mine a few weeks ago, but put it aside until I have more time. I need to do it with my work web page, and figured I'd mess it up with my own first ;). Have fun!
