It's dark, it's gray, it's rainy . . . .

and my mood today can't help but match the weather outside. So, what is a knitter to do when she needs cheering up? How about dream of the new yarn she's about it acquire this weekend?

What??? I'm not supposed to buy new yarn until Rhinebeck? Well, I have no choice. Really, I don't. I swear!

Remember I mentioned the LYS gift certificate my mom gave me for Christmas? My plan was to hoard it until I got really desperate for new yarn, and then use it as my Stash Diet Loophole. That plan got changed drastically when I came across the news that the LYS is closing in March. Their inventory is already 20% off. As I see it, I need to use this gift certificate before it's too late - what if they were to close earlier than March? Or even worse, what if I got there to find nothing left but eyelash yarn in day-glo colors!! (My apologies if you are into day-glo eyelash, of course, it's just not my thing.)

So, what do I do? Buy lots of versatile, work-horse yarns - like Cascade 220 and such? Or splurge on some really luxurious yarns I would never buy otherwise? Hmmm, I guess I'll decide when I get there and see what they have.

Hi Karen - I saw that JK was going out of business and I am so bummed. First kG and now them. Where are we to go now??

I'd go more towards the luxurious stuff. 1) Visit store & survey the inventory; 2) Visit Ravelry to ID possible projects; 3) return to store to acquire pretty yarn. :)

Sounds fun! Enjoy! : )

Well...if there is a good sale and you can find some luxury yarn (and enough to make something in..go for it!) Sometimes it would be nice to just buy the yarn you want for a project or just to have and not think about the $$ huh! ;) Have fun! :)

That sucks that the LYS is closing. At least you can hopefully score some good deals. In my experience with LYS's closing, it's best to get in there early, or you may just have orange colored yarns to choose from. Have fun shopping. I can't wait to see what you get!

Go in the store, and see what calls out to you.

You definately need to use the gift certificate now. I think you should splurge on the most luxurious yarn you can find. Make sure and take pictures for us to admire. Scritches to Charlie.

What a bummer that your LYS is going to be closing... On the other hand you can't not take atvantage of the situation... As to what to buy... I say splurge! Go nuts and get someting that you never would dream of getting with your own money:O) I hope you manage to get there while there is a good selection!!! Good Luck!

I can't wait to see what you get!

Okay, I guess you can break your diet ... but only if you send me a skein of cashmere as your punishment. ;-)

Yikes! The LYS is closing? You better get down there...or you may only have odd colors and odd skeins to choose from. :o(
Bummer. But, at least you will get to use that gift certificate. Hmmm...I would have to say get what calls out to you when you get there. It sometimes is easier that way...go without a plan...and splurge. :o)

Shop, Karen, shop! I'm sorry that the LYS is closing, but I hope you get a great deal.

I say use the gift cert now while there is still 'good' yarn available, you don't want the store to get too picked over!

I agree with amyartisan. Splurge, and her idea about exactly what to get is very, very good! ;)

SPLURGE WOMAN!

That's too bad the LYS is closing. I was just reading a thread on Ravelry about LYS closings and how nice it is to be able to touch the yarn and see the colors before you purchase (at LYS vs. on-line). In any case, I hope you found something fun yesterday! You'll have to show us what you bought. . .

I say splurge! Its supposed to be a gift =)

I agree since it's a gift it you've got to splurge!

Ah but gift certificate purchases do not count in my opinion and probably really in any knitters opinion, so technically you could use the gift certifictae and still buy more because well it is a sale and all.....lol

I say go for luxury. If that is not available, then workhorse. Have fun and hope things get better soon.

I can't wait to hear about what you pick out!

day-glo eyelash...shudder!

I would choose according to colour, but without a project plan, normally workhorse.

I can't wait to see the not-stash...;)

Too bad about the LYS, but 20% off? That means your gift certificate will go further! I would buy something luxurious, especially if it's Christmas money. That way whatever you make will be really special, and it'll remind you of your mom.

I'd say go for the workhorses that you won't regret (or be unable to find projects for) later, but that's just me. Hope you had fun, no matter what you came home with!

This is definitely a good reason to break the stash diet. I'm all about luxury, lol. It's fun to get something you might not ever buy because it's more expensive than you would usually buy. Workhorse yarns are good too, I'll play the devil's advocate, why not buy both??? :D

Don't forget that you have until midnight tonight PST to enter Charlie's back feetses in the Bunny Thumper contest over at http://kitkatknit.wordpress.com/2008/01/10/bunny-thumper-challenge/! Hope you have a great weekend.

I'm so sorry to hear that your LYS is going out of business! That sucks. I say get a bunch of workhorse yarns to keep you busy through the year. :)

Well, I cannot wait to see what lures you .

I am worried however that the yarn shop closing won't be the last. This recession will hit the shops quite hard I am afraid. I saw no sign of this 2 weeks ago at my LYS, but they serve an affluent crowd.

So sad to hear of one closing.
